Tournament Report

Thomas Jordan Takes Down the 2009 Legends of Poker Event #15 the $545 Omaha Hi-Lo Tournament

The 2009 Legends of Poker had its fifteenth overall event at the Bicycle Casino’s newly remodeled Events Center, and the play went into the wee hours of the morning. The $545 Buy-in Omaha Hi-Lo tournament was a 1-day event which began with a total of 97 players and a prize pool of $47,045. In addition to a first prize of $18,540 the winner also received a championship ring. Final table play began at level 15 with blinds at $6K/$12K and limits at $12K/$24K. Jeff Montgomery entered the final table as the chip leader holding $584,000 of the $1,642,000 chips in play.

On only the second hand Ryan Lewin was all-in with A-A-6-7 against Michael Hassen with 5-4-J-3. The board came Q-8-3-J-2 giving Michael the pot and eliminating Ryan in 9th place worth $1,100.

Five hands later we had our next elimination. On the 7th hand Michael Lemkin limped in from late position with A-3-8-8 and found himself in a three-way pot with Nobou Hamamoto and Patrick Cullip. The flop came 4-10-A and action was checked around, the turn was another 4 and after Nobou checked again, Patrick bet, causing Michael to call all-in and Nobou to fold. Patrick turned over his hand showing a A-J-2-7, and with another 10 on the river completing the board for 4-10-A-4-10 Patrick was able to scoop with his J kicker for the Hi and no Lo in the hand. With that Michael was eliminated in 8th place earning him $1,325.

On the 9th hand Brent Carter raised pre-flop with 8-A-3-5 and was called by Thomas Jordan in the big blind with 7-9-2-10. The flop came J-2-Q after which Thomas bet and Brent called all-in. The only hope for Brent was to catch a Lo hand but the K on the turn killed the chances of that and at the same time it gave Thomas a King High Straight. The river was a 3 and Brent was knocked out in 7th place taking home $1,840.

On the 17th hand four players were in before the flop with Lawrence Michael all-in. The flop came 9-6-10 and action was checked around. Jeff Montgomery would bet the turn and river as they came 5 and then J, losing all but the all-in Lawrence by the river. Jeff turned over his A-Q-8-8 giving him a Queen High Straight and Lawrence mucked his hand ending his day in 6th place and earning him $2,120.

The 25th hand had Nobou Hamamoto calling all-in before the flop with Q-5-9-A while Thomas Jordan and Jeff Montgomery also called. The betting was heavy between the two chip leaders all the way to the river with a board of 4-3-4-3-A. Jeff would get the high with an A-4-K-9 good for a full house of 4’s over A’s, while Thomas’ 3-4-7-8 would get the low with his 7-8 knocking Nobou out in 5th place worth $2,580.

The action and pace of the final table slowed after Nobou got knocked out and we would have to wait forty-one hands before our next elimination. On the 66th hand Michael Hassen raised all-in on the flop with A-A-8-10 while Thomas Jordan called with A-Q-Q-J. Thomas was in the lead with a 6-Q-9 on the flop and that lead would continue with a 5 on the turn and an 8 on the river, finishing Michael’s day in 4th place and earning $3,290.

After having to wait so long for an elimination it was somewhat surprising that we had another player knocked out on the next hand, but on the 67th hand Patrick re-raised all-in pre-flop with 3-K-5-Q and was called by Jeff Montgomery with 5-Q-K-5. The board came 8-10-7-J-7 giving Jeff the best Hi hand with two pair 7’s over 5’s, and with no Lo Patrick was out in 3rd worth $5,640. A side note, this was Patrick’s first time playing Omaha and his first final table.

The final hand was the 73nd hand with Jeff Montgomery calling all-in with A-Q-7-8 on the 2-A-5 flop and Thomas Jordan raising with A-3-7-6. The board would end up 2-A-5-4-5 giving Thomas the wheel good for both the Hi and Lo, and eliminating Jeff in 2nd place and taking home $10,810.

Thomas Jordan finished in first place and was declared the winner of the Legends of Poker fifteenth event earning him the first place prize of $18,540, and the championship ring.

BIOGRAPHY

Thomas Jordan has been playing various types of poker since he was a child, but it was not until he started playing on-line three years ago that he started playing Omaha Hi-Lo. His favorite game has now become Omaha and especially tournament play. Thomas feels that the key to this tournament was to ease up with two tables left allowing the other players to knock each other out. This is his biggest cash to date.
