Memphis Publisher Captures Top Honors in Charity Competition
This tournament was such fun, with great hospitality and great camaraderie & all in all a terrific experience,” commented Jeffrey Goldberg, who defeated 22 opponents to win the No-Limit Hold’em Media/Celebrity Invitational, which officially kicks off the second annual Jack Binion World Poker Open.
His first-place finish brought Goldberg a WPO signature suede jacket, bragging rights for a year, and $2,500 for his favorite charity, the Downtown Porter Boys and Girls Club in Memphis, Tennessee. The money was donated jointly by the Gold Strike Casino Resort and the Horseshoe Casino Hotel. “Winning the tournament means a lot to me, because I’ve raised money for a cause I believe in,” he said. “All the money will go to a new club that’s just opened in downtown Memphis, a haven for disadvantaged children in the community.”
Goldberg, the 41-year-old associate publisher and ad director for Contemporary Media, which publishes the weekly tabloid Memphis Flyer, as well as the monthly Memphis Magazine, hasn’t played much poker since his teenage years in New York and has never played No-Limit Hold’em before. “That game is very challenging, exhilarating, and fun,” he said.
Placing second in the Media/Celebrity Invitational was John West, a 30-year-old actor who has appeared in the TV series “Quantum Leap,” as well as in several movies, including The Ernest Green Story, Deep Cover, Vampires Anonymous, and Felony. The son of actor/stuntman Red West, John plays casino poker “every now and then” and has previously won a small limit hold’em competition. West also received a Jack Binion World Poker Open signature suede jacket, as did the remaining eight finalists.
Other notable players competing in the 2001 Media/Celebrity Charity Invitational were last year’s defending champion, Tommy Davis of 94.1 “The Buzz”; Argo and Nikki, also from 94.1; former Oklahoma running back Marcus Dupree; Bill Banister, morning show host for WRVR; Jodee “Big Joe” Jordan, on-air afternoon DJ at KIX 106; Charlie Kayle of Star 98; Joe Birch from Channel 5 TV; Rudi Schiffer of Good Times/Jackpot; John Wood from Commercial Appeal; free-lance writer Jerry Williams; actor Red West; and Chuck Patton, director of the Mississippi Gaming Commission.
