$30,000 Add on Pennant Race Tournament stirs up competition for World Series of Poker seats.
By Rich Wilens
Since January 3rd, 2000 Casino Arizona has held it's Pennant Race Tournament competing for seats at this years WSOP. 65 daily tournaments and 3 Saturday tournaments earn players points and cash. This Saturday tournament brought out the best to play for a $21,000 1st prize. It started something like this.
Cards in the air at 11am sharp. 11:05 am. Two great players who consistently are at the final table were to my left. I was the 1 seat. Larry from Kansas in the 4 seat, Chris in the 10 seat. Third hand I have KQs, I bet 300.00. ( Note: we started with $500 in tournament chips). The 9 seat calls me. Flop come JJK I go all in, 9 seat all in. Turn is X, River is ACE. Guess what the 9 seat had? REBUY…One rebuy at $100.00 bought another $1000.00 in tournament chips. Back in the game.
Numerous bad beat stories were floating around. Bill Woodson gets knocked out holding pocket aces to pocket queens. Queen comes on the flop, Bye Bye Bill. Last Card Larry goes down with a K high heart flush. Lost to ace high flush.
Big Blind and first to call are in the pot. The flop comes 667. Mike Fox 65s on the big blind flops trip sixes. Loose Louie Katz's (from Chicago he proudly states) has pocket 77 and flops a full house. Big Blind bets $500. One seat calls. Five on the turn. Both of them couldn't push in fast enough. Jack on the river. Sixes full of fives lost to sevens full of sixes
In the meantime the Casino Arizona had not one but two bad beat jackpot at the same 10-20 table. About $24,000 total. The whole casino is buzzing and we are getting close to the final two tables.
There are a million bad beat stories. I heard 279 of them today, including my own. We are down to 11 players. Two tables were playing hand for hand. It went back and forth for
The 11th spot. Ed Perron knew he was in trouble with just enough money to make it 5 more hands. Hand for hand, the tables dealt. Excitement was in the air. Was Ed gonna make it? It came to his time to blind all in. He went for it. The cards were dealt. Ed Perron has nothing to be sad about being 11th. He played great. The tournament has been going for 6 hours and 5 minutes. We are at the final table.
The final table looks like this:
| Seat 1 Bernie Schrader | Lansing, MI | $18000 |
| Seat 2 Bill Mckee | Scottsdale, AZ | $30,000 |
| Seat 3 M.F. Pigg | Tucson, AZ | $31,000 |
| Seat 4 Joe Owens | Phoenix, AZ | $16,000 |
| Seat 5 Sal Dimiceli | Scottsdale, AZ | $45000 |
| Seat 6 Chen Hsieh | Tucson, AZ | $54,000 |
| Seat 7 Mike Krescanko | Phoenix, AZ | $17,000 |
| Seat 8 Susan Glenn | | $36,000 |
| Seat 9 Don "Shoes" Gamboni | Scottsdale, AZ | $85,000 |
| Seat 10 William "Mugsy" Perazzoli | Scottsdale, AZ | $85,000 |
Cards in the air and we are underway. First out is the 1 seat Bernie with 18,000 in chips. Q 10s versus Susan Glenn, (in the 8 seat) with pocket KK.
Mike Krescanko goes next with pocket nines 2 seat Bill calls with KQs. K on the flop. Pair wins it. Joe Owens has A9s goes all in with Sal Dimiceli. Sal has AJ and the flop comes QJ5. 78 to follow and pair beats Joe's A high. Chen Hsieh, MF Pigg, and Sal Dimiceli round out the first 6 to be eliminated.
Mugsy is next. Trying to make a deal with Shoes, Mugsy gets a little frustrated with Shoes. Looks at pocket sevens and goes all in. Shoes calls with J3. Flop comes 9J6. Turn and river: K10. Mugsy takes 4th. NOTE: Shoes has two thirds of the chips.
Down to three players and both 2 seat, Bill Mckee and 8 seat, Susan Glenn has one stack each. Shoes has three. Back and forth 7 rounds and Bill Mckee is blinded out. That leaves Shoes and Susan. Susan wants to deal. Shoe's says No. Let's play then Susan says. Back and forth, blind taking blind until finally Susan says' Hers my stack come get me. Shoes calls with A6. Susan has KK. Flop QJ8. Turn 6 River 3. Kings win. Susan is now the chip leader. Shoe's says let's deal. Susan Says I want this. Shoe's says ok.
