Biography – Robert Turner, WOG Points Champion
By Max Shapiro
Robert “Chip-Burner” Turner, marketing consultant for MGM and formerly in marketing with the Bicycle Casino and Hollywood Park, has now won all-around titles in four decades. In the 70s he won so many mini competitions at the Golden Nugget that he was asked to take a break. In the 80s he won titles at the Stardust and Circus Circus. In the 90s it was at Diamond Jim Brady. And this latest title came via second-place finishes in Limit Hold’em and Stud Hi-Lo. He’s won a Mercury, a Lexus, a Honda and a Yugo. He brought back the Yugo for cash after driving it two blocks. The Honda he sold to Doyle Brunson for a $10,000 World Series buy-in, and on the first hand he got broke with two queens before Brunson even got to his seat. He also lost a Corvette at the Nugget after Barbara Gold took a first and a second in the last three events, and another Corvette when Don Williams won the final event at the Bike to beat him. The first time, he turned down a $100 insurance offer, figuring he was a million-to-one favorite. The second time, having learned his lesson, he accepted insurance from Johnny Chan.
