Tournament Report
Tournament Recap: Omaha High/Low Split

Tom Hunt
|
Three self-confessed Omahalics took the top spots at the second event of the Battle-of-the-Bay poker tournament at Lucky Chances. Eventually a deal was made, but not before some drama unfolded.
Nearly all of the 120 entrants took the rebuy, making the total chip count about $120,000 (12 stacks of $500 chips). With three players remaining, Tom Hunt and Tahoe Andrew had four stacks each and PEggy Spengler had three stacks. An offer was made to split the top three prizes, $5,000 each for Tom and Tahoe, $4,000 for Peggy. Offer denied. Play on!

Peggy Spengler
|
Moments later, Peggy lost a key pot and was short-stacked to about ten chips. She went all-in four times on her blinds, surviving each time with a split pot, before scooping two pots to get back up to three stacks. Another offer was made: $6,000 for Tom, $4,000 each for Tahoe and Peggy. Offer accepted. Handshakes and congrats were exchanged, and a few sighs were heard.
In mid-tournament Peggy was down to one $100 chip, proving that the Lucky Chances version of the common tournament adage is true: All you need is a chip and a chair -- and a cushion. Peggy had an unwieldy cast on her broken right arm. "I had to learn how to play left-handed."

Tahoe Andrew
|
Well-known and good-natured, tournament legend "Tahoe" Andrew offered words of advice and praise after the event. On tournaments: "You've got to last long enough to get lucky." About Lucky Chances: "Matt Savage runs a smooth tournament, as good as I've seen, and I've been around." Tahoe did not say how long he has been around. Tom Hunt guessed, "Longer than the lake."
Tournaments thrill us with quick momentum changes. With three tables remaining, Tom Hunt had only two $500 chips. At that time he was thinking, "I hope I survive." He built up and took a healthy stack to the final table, with "Nothing but winning on my mind." And win he did. Way to go, Tom.
Last night's final table looked like a sports team in uniform, with almost everyone wearing their spiffy, red, thermafiber Lucky Chances Finalist jackets. We hope you all get one! Tournaments are selling out a day in advance, so be sure to sign up now for your favorite events.
