Tournament Recap: Limit Hold 'em Shootout

Beth Dimaya was the best All Around player. She wins a trip to Las Vegas to
compete in the TOC. Package includes the $2000 entry, airfare, and Hotel

Ten fast guns faced off at the "Shootout" final table to see who would be left sitting. The fifth event of the Battle-of-the-Bay tournament at Lucky Chances featured a popular structure in which ten tables play down to two players per table, then those 20 survivors play at two tables until five remain at each, thereby forming the final table. At each level the players start with $500 in chips.
At the start of the third heat of the night, the final ten players agreed to redistribute the prize pool as shown above. "It's their tournament," said Gwen Hirokawa, assistant tournament director.
Early on, Dustin Chase remarked, "That's not really my last name. It's how I play." Dustin pursued all the way to sixth shooter.
Larry Kern, a litigation lawyer, took fifth after proposing several complicated settlements. The big stacks kept replying "motion denied" with their silence. Larry's good nature fueled the festive mood. "I'm a much better lawyer than a poker player."
Fourth-place finisher Oz Osborne did not write the song, "I am Ironman." Still, that title fits this solid player.

Oscar Li
|
The atmosphere was suddenly quiet as the big guns headed for a showdown.
Well-respected Oscar Li was serene and friendly as usual while taking third place. "I was holding on with $700 all the way." Voicing the familiar emotional confusion of tournaments: "I played well, so I'm happy, but I wish I had won."
With Oscar gone, Beth Dimaya and Walter Batara were even in chips and immediately chopped, winning $3,700 each. Not one to mince words, Beth revealed how she places in the top money so often, "I was the only woman at the table, but I was the one with the balls."

Walter Batara
|
Walter is a floorman at Lucky Chances. He and Richard London run the graveyard shift. Richard came to work just in time to see Walter carrying the trophy. "I've got the best horse in town!" They were 50-50 partners.
Special welcome to the huggable publisher of Poker Digest, June "God-I-love-this-job" Field. June will be playing her all weekend. Be sure to say hi!
