Tournament Report
Tournament Recap: Limit Hold 'em Championship
Julia Sun beamed after her pocket kings held up against Cuong Nguyen's flush draw to win the final hand of the Limit Hold 'em Championship of the Battle-of-the-Bay at Lucky Chances.
Matt Savage was on the microphone immediately to announce, "Hurrah for the women!" Of the 15 top-three spots so far this week, women have won six (and that's not counting their predicted sweep of the Ladies-Only event).
With two tables left, Julia drew a seat right next to her husband, Terry Chow. Terry finished tenth. "This is the closest we've come to both making a final table." The couple began playing Hold 'em when Lucky Chances opened two years ago. "We drove down from San Francisco one day, just to check it out," said Julia. Terry added, "Julia is the better player; she is more aggressive." This was Julia's second major Bay Area win.
In keeping with the trend, some more first-timers cashed top prizes. This was the first tournament ever for third-place Ed Z. and fourth-place Sang Hur.
With the field thinning, Julia and Cuong each dodged disaster. On one hand, Cuong faced a bet, showed top pair (aces), mucked, and saved his last 12 chips. Then he went on a rush, winning with Q-Q and K-J. Cuong folded the next few hands before hitting a big draw on the turn. Then he flopped a flush, crippling Julia. Julia survived a late-stage all-in with A-Q before roaring back. And then there were three.
Ed, Cuong and Julia agreed to a "save." Each would get $6,400, and they would play for the remaining #3,200 and the trophy. The crowd applauded the deal. Tension eased; smiles and banter ensued. Then it was all business, with the next four hands going to a showdown. Ed departed with a sincere "good luck" after Julia's 6-6 beat his Q-Q.
Julia and Cuong played a thrilling, seesaw, 30-minute heads-up match, with many big pots and multiple raises. Cuong finally succumbed. The crowd cheered the two deserving combatants, and the limit hold 'em champion of the Battle-of-the-Bay was crowned. Congratulations, Julia!
