EVENT #11 LIMIT HOLD'EM FREEROLL

THE WARRIOR PRINCESS
By Mike Paulle
How fitting that a woman should win the Hollywood Park Freeroll, their fifth
win in 11 events. This is a fantastic result with fewer than 15% of the
entire field comprised of the distaff side. But how about women coming in 1st
and 2nd, when only four women were in the money? It's the finest performance
by females in a major tournament in recent memory. Has sexual parity finally
arrived in the once male-dominated world of poker? Probably not.
There were 291 entrants in the $25,000 Limit Hold'em Freeroll, for a total
prize pool of $25,000. 3 tables were paid, a total of 27 players.

When Charlie Satoot took out the 29th player with an Ace on the river to
crack a pocket pair of 6's, Moe Mogadan got in the money. 28th place was paid
$200 without objection.
To set up the Final Table: To his credit, Tom Lockhart went for the win not a
chair at the Final Table. With two real short stacks hanging on, Lockhart
went all-in on the flop after raising with pocket Queens. Frank Hamamy had
the A K of Spades and flopped an Ace.

Pocket Aces all-in helped Carl McCullough survive his first all-in, but the
big blind got him the second time. With an A 3, Carl didn't get the Ace he
needed against pocket 7's in the small blind held by Ki Uhm.
Hanging on for 8th, Emil Calitis was next to get blinded out of the freeroll.
All-in with Q 6, Emil couldn't beat the A 10 of Sam Sanusi even without the
10 on the flop.
There was so much raising going on, Ki Uhm didn't get to see any flops.
All-in for his big blind with K 6, he didn't have enough chips to stop Zena
Mogadam from calling with 7 4. The 7 came on the flop and Ki hit the rail in
7th.
All the big hands Frank Hamamy made to become chip leader, before arriving at
the Final Table, got cracked once he was there. In the most memorable hand of
the night, Hamamy raised before the flop and bet out when an Ace came on the
turn. "I put him on a flush draw," Zena Mogadam said when she called Hamamy
down with a pocket pair of 4's and two overcards on board. Hamamy never
recovered from the hand and went out 6th with a Q 6 all-in for six chips that
lost to Charlie Satoot's J 5 and a Jack on the flop.
By continually throwing away hands with just a few chips, Gerardo Lilagan
moved up to 5th. Finally, all-in from the small blind with K 4 Gerardo could
only watch helplessly as Zena Mogadam caught a 7 on the flop with her 7 6 big
blind hand.
Zena was on fire at this point with more than half the chips on the table.
She constantly turned down deal offers from Sam Sanusi and Charlie Satoot.
When Sanusi raised all-in on the flop with an A Q, Zena with a Q 8 was
drawing dead to a 10 for a gutshot straight. With a 10 on the river, Zena
somersaulted another opponent out of the tournament.
Playing $10,000/$20,000, now, the last male survivor of Zena's onslaught was
Charlie Satoot. He raised all-in with pocket 3's. Zena called with K J in her
big blind and flopped a King.
With about a 4-1 chip lead head up, Zena had a big advantage over a
formidable opponent. Linda Johnson isn't just the Publisher of Card Player
Magazine, she's also a World Series of Poker bracelet holder and winner of
innumerable tournaments. After some sparing back and forth, both women found
a hand they could fight with. Linda had the A 9 of Diamonds and went all-in
on the turn. Unfortunately, the hand Zena liked was pocket Kings. Johnson
needed an Ace on the river that didn't come.
It's been a long dry spell for the 'Warrior Princess,' but ZENA IS BACK.
