Tournament Report

Vegas Pro is Omaha Winner!

Marlon Delossantos, a Vegas pro and World Series Omaha bracelet holder, beat a tough field to win the sixth event in Legends 2000, $300 Omaha hi-lo. His opponents included Steve Badger, with Omaha wins at the World Series and three Legends; Spring Cheong, with a $1,000 Omaha Legends title; Hieu "Tony" Ma, with a hold'em bracelet and an Omaha win at Commerce; and Stan Goldstein, last year's $1,000 Omaha hi-lo Legends event winner.

It took an hour for the final table to get heads-up, but another hour before Santos could dispatch his last opponent, Raymond Davis. Davis, another pro, in February had a $38,000, seventh-place cash-out at Commerce's million-dollar event. Santos came to the final table with only $13,500 to Davis' $36,500, but two big scoop hands in early going gave him the ammunition he needed.

Limits started at $1,000-$2,000. Davis became the designated terminator, dispatching four of the first five players. David Shumate of West Virginia arrived with $1,000, but hung on for 10 hands, losing when Davis, with A-4-9-9, hit a third 9 to beat his A-3-3-6. After many blind-stealing hands went by, Stan Goldstein, winner of three Legends events last year, went broke without showing his hand. Davis held A-2-5-10 and scooped by making trip deuces.

With limits at $1,500-$3000, the gracious Spring Cheong was the terminator's third straight victim. Starting with A-A-A-3, she would have flopped quads if all her bullets played. The board came A-3-2-K-7 with three clubs and Davis flopped a flush to scoop her out of action. John Inashima started the final table with just $4,000, but nobody would ever bet on this survival specialist getting knocked out fast. He even eliminated the next player when he started with 2-3-4-5 and two clubs. Wendell Teet went all in with A-5-5-7 and was drawing dead when the flop came K-Q-9 of clubs. Tony Ma was the fourth Davis victim. He went broke on A-5-5-Q when Davis, with 2-3-8-10 filled on a board of 3-3-9-2-2.

Davis now had exactly half of the $112,000 in play. Badger, determined to win his first Legends Omaha tournament in an even year, was lowest-chipped but hung on, denying that he was trying to outlast Inashima. In the big blind, with $2,000-$4,000 limits, he was finally all in for $2,000 with A-10-9-8. He liked the Q-J-4 flop which gave him 13 outs for a straight, but missed and lost to Delossantos' paired queen. A few hands later, Inashima was finally wrestled out of his seat. He re-raised all in with a great high hand of A-K-J-10, but all low cards came as Delossantos made a wheel.

Heads-up, Delossantos had a $69,000-$42,000 advantage, and the two went at it for 45 hands. The majority of the pots were split, but Davis managed to pull into a slight lead when he made a set with A-7-7-Q. On the next hand, Delossantos regained the lead by flopping a straight, and never lost it. At one point, Raymond thought he heard his opponent mutter the f-word, which was not confirmed. Just as well, because had Marlon gotten a penalty, Davis would then be playing with himself. On the final hand, Davis three-bet it all in with Q-Q-9-2 against A-2-6-10. The board came A-3-7-3-7, and the paired ace gave Delossantos the win and $16,800.

Super satellite action, meanwhile, continued hot with three seats given out. The action center was the table with Layne Flack, Men Nguyen and Carlos Mortensen. The three were partying and having a re-buy competition which WSOP champ Mortensen won with a reputed 18 re-buys. But none of the trio managed to win a seat for the $5,000 championship. -Max Shapiro .

BIOGRAPHY

This is the first Legends title for Marlon Delossantos, a 47-year-old native of the Philippines. The Las Vegas resident has been playing poker for 25 years and has won a lot of small tournaments and one big one. That came when he collected $220,000 for his victory in the $2,500 Omaha hi-lo event at the World Series in 1993. His favorite games are Omaha hi-lo and hold'em, which he likes to play at $80-$160 limits at the Bellagio. He describes his play as solid, but aggressive in the right spots.

In tonight's event, he said he was short-chipped at the second table, but got healthy at the final table in two big hands, first when he flopped a wheel and then when he made a six-high straight. He was in good shape thereafter, he said. Delossantos singled out Steve Badger as his toughest opponent at the final table.
