Tournament Report
| Ho Wins on Flack Penalty!
Winning his first tournament ever, professional player Matthew Ho captured the eighth event of Legends of Poker, $300 lowball. The event took a bizarre turn when Layne Flack, partying and joking, uttered the f-word after losing a hand. With three players left, he was tagged with a mandatory 10-minute penalty. At that point, he had close to a third of the chips in play. When he returned, more than half of them had been blinded off and Ho, raising almost every hand, had gotten most of them.
With nine left, Flack set the final table when he raised Vinnie Vinh all in, winning with a pat 10 while Vinh caught a jack. Ron Faltinsky, who was in the small blind with $1,000 left, opted not to gamble and made his third final table. Also making his third appearance was Marlon Delossantos. Two women, Kathy Liebert and Joyce Mason, were in a virtual tie for the chip lead.
Limits started at $1,000-$2,000. On the first hand, Faltinsky called all in under the gun in four-way action. When the betting was over, Layne turned up 6-5-4-3-2, but Ron had been dealt a pat 6-5-4-2-A! Delossantos, starting with only $4,500, was first to depart. On the third hand, he raised, and Ho then put him in for his last $500 chip. Marlon stood with a 10 and Matthew, drawing to 7-6-5-3, caught an ace.
On hand 12, with limits at $1,500-$3,000, there was four-way action again. Two players, Bill Norman a factory worker retiree, and Lindsay Jones, a former CPA who now owns an auto repair business, went all in. Liebert, in the big blind, was unsure how many cards to draw. Flack leaned over, peeked at her hand and laughed hysterically. After long thought, Kathy drew three. She made a 9-6, knocking out both Norman, who drew one and made a 9-8, and Jones, who took one and paired his deuce.
A few hands later the durable Faltinsky, who had gone all in and survived a couple more times, finally succumbed after posting his last $500 in the small blind against Flack and Kathy. With two other players, he had a tough decision, and finally decided to break his pat jack and draw two. He paired a 4 and lost to Liebert’s pat 9-7.
As play continued, Flack kept downing beers and bantering with Liebert. “You’re the worst and luckiest player I ever saw,” she joked. “I’m drunk, stupid and lucky, but I can beat a girl,” he responded. Little did he know that the party would soon come to an abrupt and disastrous end.
On hand 35, Liebert raised all in for $3,500 in the small blind, standing with a 10-7. Mason, retired after 15 years as a prop, first at Gardena clubs and then at Commerce, called and drew a card to 7-6-5-2. She caught a joker and now three were left.
As play continued, Mason dipped down to $5,000 after Flack made a 7. She went all in several times after that, but managed to stay in action. On the 50th hand, Flack drew his 10-minute suspension, not taking it graciously. He had about $28,000 in chips, and every three hands lost $3,000, and then $4,500 when the blinds went to $1,500-$3,000. In all, it cost him a punishing $15,000.
Returning after 10 hands, Flack quickly lost a couple of pots and finally, in the small blind, re-raised Ho for his last $1,000, losing when he drew to 9-6-4-2 and paired his 4. It took but two more hands for Ho to polish off the low-chipped Mason. On the final hand, he was dealt a pat 8-4 while she drew two, both of them kings. –Max Shapiro
BIOGRAPHY
Matthew Ho, who is 52, came to this country from Hong Kong 20 years ago. He now lives in Sunnyvale, California. Ho has been playing poker for 10 years, the past two years full time. He describes himself as an all-around player who will sit down in any type of game. He prefers limits of $80-$160.
Ho plays mostly side games at the Bicycle Casino and Commerce when he is in town, though with his first tournament win under his belt, he said he might play more of these events. The closest he has come before was when he came in third in a lowball event at Commerce two years ago. Tonight, he said, he was never in trouble and steadily built up chips throughout the tournament. He described his play as aggressive and added that he was lucky in getting a steady stream of good hands.
