Kid Daniel Wins Third One!
It was a big night for Daniel "The Kid" Negreanu as he won his third Legends 2002 event, $1,000 no-limit hold’em, and also took over the all-around points lead. It was the first time Daniel has won three events in one tournament. "And don’t think I’m through yet," he promised. Paul Darden had a modest chip lead when he got heads up with Negreanu. But Daniel kept holding over him, the show promoter turned pro said after their 25-hand match-up.
Greg Meyer finished tenth when his pocket aces got cracked by Ron Rose's set of 7s. The final table started with $100 antes, $400-$800 blinds and almost no action. The first 27 hands went by with only one flop. There were eight all-in moves (five of them by Donald McNamara) with no calls. Finally, on hand 30, with blinds at $600-$1,200, Rose moved in with his same pocket 7s. Debbi Landon, low-chipped, called with A-3 and picked him off when an ace turned. On the next hand, he went all in for about $15,000 with K-Q. This time Debbi could cover him and broke him with A-A.
Ten hands later, poker player Raymond Davis was in the big blind with 9-6. On a flop of K-9-7, he bet his last $2,200, losing to McNamara's kings and 9s. Ten hands after that, Kathy Liebert made it $4,500 to go and computer programmer Jeff Yoak raised $6,200 all with K-Q suited. She had A-K and put him away when the board came K-J-6-10-6. Kathy, who had been winning a lot of pots, now had the lead with roughly $70,000 in chips. Darden, Landon and Negreanu were all bunched behind her in the $40,000 range while Vince Burgio was barely hanging on with about $7,000.
Hand 55 was the last for Landon, who has wins at Legends 2000 and 2002. With blinds of $1,000-$2,000, she and Darden both called after Negreanu raised to $6,000. When the flop came J-4-2 with two spades, she had top pair with J-9 and moved in for about $30,000. But Darden, with Ks, Qs, called and broke her when a 6s turned. Burgio, meanwhile who had started with a meager $11,200, miraculously was still around after going all in seven times. His luck ended on the next hand. He moved in for $4,000 with K-J. Liebert called with A-10 and flopped a winning ace. Just as well, perhaps, because Burgio had the more important task of filling in as tournament writer the next day and needed his sleep.
Soon after, McNamara moved in for about $46,000 with pocket 8s. Liebert, who at this point could barely cover his bet, pondered, then called with Ad, Qh. Four diamonds came and flushed him away. Three-handed, she had roughly $95,000 to about $80,000 for Darden and $50,000 for Negreanu. But then she lost the biggest pot of the night to Darden. She had A-Q, he had K-5 in the big blind. The flop was K-7-5. He bet $3,000 and she raised $4,500. When an ace turned, he bet $8,000 and she raised $19,000. She then bet $20,000 on a river 6 and he called, taking in a $110,000 pot with his two pair. Later down to about $20,000, Kathy raised all in with K-10. Darden had A-Q of clubs and beat her with a flush.
Heads-up, with $2,000-$4,000 blinds, Paul had roughly $128,000 to Daniel's $98,000. But Daniel gradually wore him down with better hands and eventually had a big lead. On the last deal, Daniel bet $12,000 into a K-10-4 flop and Paul moved in with 10-7. But Daniel, with K-J, had top pair, and that ended the tournament. - Max Shapiro
BIOGRAPHY
Daniel Negreanu was helped along in tonight's tournament by being dealt pocket aces six times, winning with them each time. He was on fire at the beginning, and had about $10,000 by the second level. Then he sagged in the middle stages, and later caught cards when he needed them. "I could have told you that Paul and I would get heads-up," he said, because we both play the same way." His style, Negreanu said, is to play a lot of pots and confuse his opponents, but to make sure he has a real hand when big pots develop "I was playing good tonight," he added, "but I was also getting good cards."
Negreanu, who looks even younger than his 28 years, collected $44,800 for his no-limit victory. Earlier, he picked up $22,560 for winning event 5, $300 7-card stud hi-lo, and $22,600 for finishing first in $500 Omaha Hi-Lo.
