$260 BUY-IN
$600 in chips
IT WAS A NGUYEN/WIN SITUATION
By Mike Paulle
No matter how famous he becomes, former World Champion Scotty Nguyen can't
get people to pronounce his name correctly. His last name is pronounced WIN,
and that's what he did.
There were 228 entrants in the $260 Buy-In 7-Card Stud Hi-Lo for a total
prize pool of $59,280. Two tables were paid, a total of 16 players.
Oklahoma Johnnie Hale had about as many outs as possible with his A A 2 3 4
9. Scotty Nguyen had J's and 6's. Don't worry, a brick splashed into the
river to wave Hale a farewell in 17th.
The Final Table was set up when Mike Fishman couldn't catch a second pair
with his trip Aces. Fred Sigur did, though, with his trip 5's.
THE FINAL TABLE:
52 mins left of 1 hr. $200 ante, $500 bring-in, playing $2k/$4k
| Player/Hometown | Chip Count |
| Seat 1: Neal Lorsbach (Tacoma, WA) | $35,700 |
| Seat 2: Asher Derei (Tel Aviv, Israel) | $2,700 |
| Seat 3: Don Thompson (Olympia, WA) | $6,400 |
| Seat 4: Fred Sigur (Chalmette, LA) | $32,800 |
| Seat 5: Scotty Nguyen (Henderson, NV) | $29,200 |
| Seat 6: Will Noyes (Thompson, PA) | $11,700 |
| Seat 7: Trieu Quang (Fountain Valley, CA) | $17,500 |
| Seat 8: Terry Wells (Baltimore, MD) | $3,000 |
Sometimes you are not supposed to win and there is nothing you can do about
it. Don Thompson had three Aces. Asher Derei had nothing but a bet to call
Thompson's all-in. Derei caught five perfect cards in a row: the case Ace
followed by a King, a Queen, a 10 and a Jack on the river. What a cruel game!
Trieu Quang returned the favor to Derei in 7th when Quang caught a 2nd pair
on the river to crack Asher's all-in 7's and a failed low draw.
Then Trieu took Terry Wells out with a straight flush draw that settled for a
straight. Terry had Wells of tears with his A's and 8's in 6th.
It might be a good idea for Tournament Directors around the country to invite
Dr. Will Noyes to their tournaments. When a player passed out a few days ago
the good doctor was with him, giving CPR, several minutes before the
paramedics could arrive. But Will couldn't save himself from an onslaught by
the suddenly incendiary Scotty Nguyen. Doc went all-in with 7's and a low
draw that died. Scotty caught A's up on the last card.
Neal Lorsbach already won an event at this year's Open. Stud Hi-Lo must not
be Neal's game, he only finished 4th.
Lorsbach had the misfortune of getting a good hand at a time when Scotty
Nguyen was on one of his patented heaters. Neal made A's and 8's. Scotty
trapped him all-in with rolled up 6's.
It took nearly an hour for the two Vietnamese to get heads up. Fred Sigur,
even with a short stack, is that tough. Fred finally succumbed to Scotty's
7's full of Kings.
Scotty Nguyen is the first Vietnamese to win the World Championship,
something that Men 'The Master' Nguyen probably isn't too happy about. He won
two events at the World Poker Open in Tunica while making five Final Tables.
So when Scotty, with $96k in chips, suggested to Trieu Quang that he take
$4,000 extra to lay down his $42k in chips, Quang accepted. Wouldn't you?
