Tournament Report

A KEY HAND 01.20 CDT: Per-Werner slow-played an ace beautifully by not raising with it before the flop. Both players checked the flop. Layne, with QJ and a straight draw, took a shot at it, betting 5K on the turn. The Swede, now with two pair, raised him an extra 12K – enough to put the American all-in. Layne pushed in the extra 12K ... and got lucky on the river, hitting a king and his straight!

FINAL HAND 01.35 CDT: Per-Werner bet 10K when he hit top pair on the flop. Layne couldn’t believe his luck; the flop gave him two-pair, and the American had no hesitation in putting himself all-in. The Swede asked for a count-down of Layne’s chips (an extra 29.6K on top of the 10) and called. “You live by the river, you die by the river,” writer Andy Glazer eloquently put it after it was all over. A King on the river saved Layne before, but a repeat ten – giving Per-Werner trips – spelled doom on this one.
