Tournament Report
| WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?
There were at least 30 players I knew who started this event, NONE, zero, nada made it into the 81 who were paid. Unbelievable.
For pictures of this event, please check out Mark Napolitano's videos on the homepage.
The second highest World Poker Open attendance of 1,117 was recorded today. Again, 81 were paid. We got down to nine at an unreasonable 3:30 am last night.

7:57 remained in the 5,000/10,000 level.
Playing so many levels last night to get here, several players came in begging for the morphine drip. At 5k/10k blinds, playing 10k/20k, a couple of them didn't have two orbits. But it's an extra few grand and something to brag to your friends about, a WPO Final Table.
The shortest of the pygmies was David Warren and he understandably went all-in for 15k on the second hand when he picked up pocket 4's. It turned out that he needed and had the 4 of Clubs for a flush to double up.
It got worse for the short people. They had no reason to live. The blinds went up to 5k/15k playing 15/30. Double that dose of morphine, please.
Not as lucky as David Warren, Al Capozzi started a stampede to the door on hand 12. Al Cap hit his dogpatch when he tossed in his last chip with A 5. Campbell Davis got a freeroll with his J 7 and turned two pair. Lil' Abner would have been proud of Al for getting this far in 9th.
No waiting! On hand 15 Bill Mann took it like a, well...man. He did the shove with his last precious 6k and pocket 5's. Presto, Bill was gone in 8th when an Ace turned for David Notaro with A 7 offsuit.
On the next hand, pushing Bill out the door was Dave Tobin. Dave chose the K 8 of Hearts as his exit strategy. That pesky David Warren had just enough chips to cover Tobin's last 30k with pocket 6's. On the turn, up jumps the devil, the third six. The battle of the Davids had no goliath. Warren stoned Tobin into 7th.
All this heroism did Warren to no avail. He still couldn't mix with the high society. On hand 34, Warren pieced together an all-in bet of 10k after raising and reraising Campbell Davis. Warren had the worst hand in poker, pocket Kings. It was too late on the flop. Campbell flopped a set of 7's and absolutely loved Warren's reraises. 6th is good when you start in 9th. But without those pocket Kings, Warren was headed for higher ground.
It was the second time in six hands that Campbell Davis had demolished the cowboys. The first time he was running low and as he said afterward, 'I was getting blinded off.' The dream scenario turned this table around for Davis. He had pocket Aces and David Notaro had the dreaded Kings. Notaro couldn't get off the hand with a board of A 5 4 5 5. The slow play and full house were lethal to David's stack. Campbell Davis was on his way to steamrolling this table from here out.
We got real short on hand 35 when Vipul Kothari ended a really bleak experience. He barely won a hand. With the big blind coming up, Vipul went all-in under the gun with J 8 offsuit, which was likely to be a slightly better than random big blind hand. David Notaro got a few of his chips back by calling the all-in with the K J of Spades. The King was good. There's the lesson. You can win with one King in your hand, but not with two.
Four handed Campbell Davis and Glyn Banks had about 300k each. While Chad Moore and David Notaro had around 150k each.
We were still at 5k/15k blinds when on hand 55 David Notaro had had enough of this mess. He bounced his case 20k in with A 6 offsuit from the small blind. No problem, David, says Glyn Banks. I've got pocket 8's and I call. One overcard isn't gonna get it done if it isn't a King. With two Kings on board the lone Ace is useless to David in 4th.
Is it soup yet? Campbell Davis is canning and labeling this table. No one else is allowed to win a hand, it's a rule. Unless Chad Moore is all-in pf course. That hand Moore wins leaving Glyn Banks to try an all-in.
Sure, Glyn loses his first and only one. Banks of the Mississippi is where we are. And Banks of the Glyn is on the rail in third when his A 2 all-in catches air. Campbell Davis can't miss a flop blindfolded. He makes yet another two pair.
Heads up Campbell has a better than 4-1 chip lead of the fortunate Chad Moore. By all rights it should be Glyn Banks here, but Chad made an extra $30,000 by never losing an all-in hand. Moore is amazing. Chad keeps hanging on. You'd think he was from Florida, not Indiana. He even turns down some more cash offered by the prohibitive chip leader, so Campbell Davis proceeds to take every chip.
But first we have just a little drama. Davis tries to buffalo Banks with second pair on the flop and almost loses the tournament for it. Campbell had 10 7. Chad had pocket 8's. Moore won a 300k pot because he refused to throw his 8's away with the board 9 7 3 K 2. It had to be the tenth all-in win for Moore at this table. Not a record, but pretty astounding.
That was it, however, for excitement. 'I wanted to take over control,' Campbell said afterward and he did. It took until hand 98 to get Chad Moore all-in for another and last time. For a change, it was Campbell 'Soup' Davis that hit a straight on the river to end it.
The new surge in interest in poker has brought out legions of previously unknown poker players. I doubt I will ever see 81 players in the money that I don't know again. That's a personal record that will never be broken.
Who are these people, anyway?
