Tournament Report
| MEN NGUYEN WINS THE SENIORS Defeats 294 Players in Event Hosted by “Oklahoma Johnny” Hale
“Oklahoma Johnny” Hale once again hosted the Seniors No-Limit Hold’em Championship event. This year there were 295 entrants, slightly less than last year (301) but with a prize pool of $147,500, which was over $50,000 greater than a year ago. This
year’s champion, Men Nguyen, collected a first place prize of $43,640 along with a trophy and leather jacket. All final table participants received an autographed copy of “Oklahoma Johnny’s” book “The Life and Times of a Gentleman Gambler.”
The final table chip leader, Robert Sherry, was the first player eliminated in tonight’s action. He lost approximately
one quarter of his chips to Mike Salem and then ran up against Men Nguyen. Sherry had AQ and when
the flop came 9Q4, he had top pair. He went all in and was called by Nguyen with KJ. When the turn revealed
a 10, Nguyen had a straight. Nothing came up on the river and Sherry was out. Willard Noyes lost to John
Malley with a pair of 4’s and Larry Toole succumbed to Michael Santoro’s two pair. J.R. Clinton had AQ up
against Malley’s AK and was eliminated when the board showed 8K810A. Sam Blum, the short stack on the
final table, was able to hang on for fifth place. Fourth place was claimed by Michael Santoro after he fell victim
to Nguyen who played 89S versus KK and was rewarded with a straight when the board showed 67Q10K.
With three left at the table, Nguyen had a substantial chip advantage over Malley and Salem and was willing for
them to go head to head. Malley went all in with A10 and Salem, with a small chip advantage, called with 66.
The board showed 587A9 and Malley lost to Salem’s straight.
That set up the final confrontation of the evening. Salem, who had been able to gain some ground on Nguyen
with remarkable patience and persistence, finally called Nguyen’s all in with 22. Nguyen had Q6 and with a
877109 board he had another straight and the victory!
