Tournament Report
Annand Ramdin was declared this year’s champion in the $500 Limit Texas
Hold’em after a rousing duel with Pok Kim, Portland, OR, at the final table. Ramdin
from the Bronx, NY, claimed the first place prize of $65,200 as well as the fine
leather jacket and trophy which goes to the winner.
Jason Wood, Red Creek, NY, and John Ferlazzo, Scarsdale, NY, who were the two
short stacks in the finals, were the first to be eliminated. Wood flopped a set of 7’s
but he ran up against Firas Haddad, Arlington, NY, who had KQ. With a board of
A7J109, Haddad got his straight on the turn for the knockout punch. Ferlazzo, who
had AK, lost to Ramdin who had two pair. Haddad was forced all in playing a
Q10; but he couldn’t improve and lost to James Morse, Bedford, MA, who won
with A high. Barry Howe, Sudbury, MA, with a 97, was forced to go all in after he
flopped a straight. Unfortunately for him, Kim had A6 and with 65888 on board
she had a full house. Michael Kanarellis, Peabody, MA, had AJ but it wasn’t
enough to stave off elimination by Morse who had A6 and caught a 6 on the flop. Ryan Smith,
Columbus, OH, ran up against Kim who called his all in bet with a 45. His 2’s couldn’t survive the
7 she caught on the river which hooked up perfectly with a 63 on the flop. With the betting limit at
10000/20000, Kim lowered the boom on two players at once. Michael Garson, Hartford, CT, and
Morse, with a pair each, could not catch up to her two pair.
That left two players of the original 496 and the final confrontation between Kim and Ramdin
started with each having almost equal stacks. In a back and forth battle, Ramdin was the first to go
all in. He had 99 and she had 64; when the board showed 104102J, his two pair survived. After
slowly rebuilding his chip count into a decisive advantage, he forced Kim to go all in with a K5.
She flopped (58J) a pair of 5’s. But Ramdin had 76 and his open ender was rewarded with a 9 on
the turn; the K on the river was not nearly enough to save Kim.
In 2003, this event attracted 281 players with a prize pool of $142,500; this year, there were 496
entrants and a total prize pool of $250,000 - a significant increase in both categories. With such an
increase in players, those reaching the final table had to work doubly hard to make it that far. Congratulations
to all!!
