Tournament Report
In the wee hours of Monday morning , it came
down to the final nine players of a record 853
competing for the champion’s title of $500 No-
Limit Texas Hold’em Champion—2004. The
prize pool was also a record $428,500. Total entries
for 2003 were 515 and the prize pool was
$259,500. The turnout for 2004 clearly reflects
the impressive growth of interest in our sport.
The final table started slowly as the players, especially the short stacks, attempted to conserve their
chips. However, that was not to be the case, as Joseph Ward, Revere, MA and Scott Manzi, Miami,
FL, were the first to go. Ward lost in a three way all in situation; he had A8, Chris Manuel, Halifax,
Nova Scotia, had KK and Phil Rosenberg, Ypsilanti, MI, had 1010. When the board came out
A81042, Rosenberg took everything from Ward and left Manuel with a short stack. Manzi with A7
ran into Martin Virgen, Reno, NV, who had JJ. After a 10JA flop, he was left hoping for an A or 77;
it was not to be. George Phillips was the next up against Virgen who was doing the majority of the
work at the final table. He had JJ against Virgen’s AK; with the board showing QQK52, he collected
his 7th place money. Sixth place ended up being the property of Manuel. He had A3 to K6 for Joseph
Perrone, Miami, FL, but Perrone had two pair on the flop (6KA) and filled on the river to add
insult to injury. Jonathan Tare, Brooklyn, NY, the final table chip leader, was the fifth place finisher.
His K4 was useless against Perrone’s A10 when the flop showed A108 and the turn and river gave
no assistance. Virgen put up a good fight to stay on the table but in the end he had to accept 4th; his
KJ lost to Rosenberg’s A7 when the flop showed an A. Rosenberg and Perrone waged a spirited
battle of back and forth action but Rosenberg ended up the winner when his two pair edged Perrone.
The last two at the table were Rosenberg and Benjamin Cahan, Miami, FL Rosenberg was the chip
leader at that point but Cahan put up a valiant fight. In the end, however, he went all in with a pair of
7’s; Rosenberg called with suited 84 and was rewarded when an 8 came on the flop and no help appeared
for Cahan. Rosenberg was relieved and thankful to accept the crystal trophy, leather jacket
and the $86,429 first place prize!
