Tournament Report
The second time was a charm for Jason Wood of Red Creek, NY. After finishing in
tenth place in $500 Limit Hold’em on Saturday, Jason took home the championship
in 7 Card Stud Hi-Lo, 8 or better. With a field of 201 entrants and a prize pool of
$102,500, the 2004 edition of this event was significantly larger that 2003 which attracted
129 players and had a prize pool of $66,500. Jason certainly had his work cut
out for himself at the beginning of the day. In the end, after fifteen hours of competition,
he was able to outpace the rest of the pack.
The final hand of the final table came down Jason versus Joseph “Worm” Palma of
Philadelphia, PA. Though not the chip leader in the beginning, Jason had been able
to build a large lead over the rest of the table and when Palma was forced all in with a
Q high and no low, Jason with AA had the trophy, the leather jacket and the first
place prize of $30,894.
Jason had earlier eliminated 3rd place Dale Phillips, Darien, IL, and 4th place Jim
Wheatley, Harrisonburg, VA, in the same hand. Both Dale and Jim had been all in on
previous occasions and when Jason caught a J on the river to complete the J high
straight that was more than enough to top Dale’s KK and Jim’s JJ. Fifth place belonged
to Paul Lombardo, Abescon, NJ, who was not able to duplicate his wife’s 2nd
place finish of a year ago. But as the short stack on the final table he did well to finish
where he did. “Worm” Palma had AK to AQ for Paul as well as 7542A to 8642A
for low. Sixth place was claimed by Joseph Bell, Charlotte, NC. He was unfortunate
to run up against Jason’s 5’s full of A’s. Joseph’s K high flush was trumped by an A
on the river. Peter Brownstein, Chicago, IL, in 7th place, went all in three times
before he lost to Lombardo’s wheel. The 8th place finisher was John Hoang, Alhambra,
CA. His two pair fell in three way action to Wood’s full house and when the low
was claimed by Brownstein, John was the first to depart the final table.
When asked if he would try for a third final table, Jason stated, “Tomorrow’s another
day and I’ll give it a shot.”
