Tournament Report

When the competition began at 10 AM, there were a record number of participants vying for the championship and the $258,000 prize pool of the 2004 World Poker Finals $2000 No-Limit Texas Hold’em event.

At 4 AM, after 18 hours of competition, there were ten players left and play was suspended until 6 PM on Saturday, November 6.
It would take four more hours of poker to determine the winner.

Louis Lazzinnaro, Lake Success, NY, and Carlo Sciannameo, Worcester, MA, were the final two remaining when Carlo went all in with the first hand into head’s up action.
Louis, the chip leader, quickly called with Q9. Carlo showed AJ and, when the board showed Q5346, Louis took home the first place prize of $154,124 to go along with his commemorative leather jacket and crystal trophy.

Carlo claimed the second place prize of $94,617. Third place money was left in the hands of Van Nguyen of Toronto, Ontario, who could not improve on an A8 and fell victim to Lazzinnarro’s AQ.
Robert Hume, Orlando, Fl, was all in more than once and was able to hold on for fourth place. In the end, his AJ could not catch up to Carlo’s pair of 6’s. Fifth, sixth and seventh place’s were all claimed as a result of Louis’ efforts.

Richard Tatalovich, Scottsdale, AZ, lost with K10 to trip Q’s. Steven Rosen, Armonk, NY, had K6 to KJ and was looking good with a 6 on the flop but, when the turn was a J, he was in sixth.
Melissa Hayden, Brooklyn, NY, felt good about her pocket 8’s when Louis showed pocket 3’s.
Joy turned to sorrow when the flop produced a 3 and she did not improve. Van Nguyen’s pocket 4’s was enough to put Niman Kenkre, Belmont, MA, into eighth place when his AK did not pair. Chad Moore, Frankfort, IN, the final table short stack, improved to ninth place; his J7 was behind Nguyen’s K4 and a board of 86AQ6.

Michael Dix, Seattle, WA, with JJ, was an early loser to Carlo’s KK.
Entries for this event in 2002 and 2003 were 69 and 153 respectively; the total of 259 for 2004 was more than both of the previous years combined.
One further sign of the growth of poker competition!
